Township of North Kawartha

The township of North Kawartha is surrounded by fresh water lakes including Chandos, Jack’s, Anstruther and Eels Lake and is comprised of the following communities: Apsley, Big Cedar and Woodview. The majority of Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park is located in the North Kawartha Township. The north shore of scenic Stoney Lake is apart of this township as well. 

Begin your trip by heading north to Apsley. Start your day with a visit to Swiss Bear Restaurant & Bakery or Irish Hills Farm (seasonal) which are stops on The Butter Tart Tour that you won’t want to miss!

Make your way to Eels Creek Canoe Park where you can enjoy a scenic paddle or hike through Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park. This back country provincial park is located on the southern edge of the Canadian Shield and is home to 90,000 acres of undeveloped area featuring a rugged rolling landscape of small lakes, wetlands, forests and rock barrens.

Find your way into the Petroglyphs Provincial Park, the largest known concentration of Aboriginal rock carvings in Canada. These 900 Petroglyphs were carved into white marble rock hundreds of years ago and depict turtles, snakes, birds, humans, and other images. Enjoy a variety of hiking trails as well beginning from the learning centre.

Head West to Viamede Resort where you can have lunch at the Boathouse Restaurant while taking in scenic views of Stoney Lake. Sit outside on the wrap-around patio to enjoy the lake breeze. After lunch, check into the resort. Viamede offers a variety of amenities to choose from. Relax on the beach or by the pool, adventure through the six walking/hiking trails Viamede has to offer. Enjoy a variety of other activities such as tennis, disc golf, canoeing and kayaking, water sports and more. As dinner time roles around, head over to Mount Julian to enjoy some fine dining. Viamede has a wide range of accommodations including deluxe guest rooms in the main lodge and in the hilltop building, one-bedroom suites in the hilltop bedroom, as well as one, two and three bedroom cottages. All of the accommodations offer spectacular views of Stoney Lake.
