Take the boat out of storage and get it back on the water as the ice thaws and fishing awaits! The spring thaw brings out the steelhead spawn, a great fish to catch for fisher-folk of any level. Head out to resorts along Buckhorn Lake this spring for your chance to nab some pike as well, or hit up one of the many rivers and streams in the area to catch some rainbow trout.
As the days get longer, hit the locks and cast a line into the Trent-Severn Waterway this summer. Take advantage of our region’s free fishing weekends. The Kawarthas have many great spots to cast a line from without leaving the shore. There is an abundance of great fish to catch all over the region, and whether you own a boat or not, there are plenty of rentals to get you out on the water and reeling in that muskie, smallmouth bass, or a walleye.
The temperature is getting cooler and the days are shorter, take advantage of the end of boating season and get out on the water. Fall is a great season for fishing in The Kawarthas. One of our favourite spots to check out is Belmont Lake, just a 20 minute drive from Havelock. This lake is rich with aquatic life and will ensure that you leave the water satisfied with your catch of the day!
Ice Fishing. Do we need to say more? One of Canada’s most cherished pastimes thrives in The Kawarthas. If you’re new to the sport, choose a day with lots of sun and not a lot of wind, and make sure you dress appropriately (Bundle up!) Two great spots to check out when you’re getting started are Rice Lake and Chemong Lake where you’ll nab some perch, bluegill, and crappie. For the more experienced ice fisher, we recommend getting out to the Kawartha Highlands, where you’ll find a unique backcountry ice fishing experience where you’ll have the chance to pull in some beautiful rainbow trout (and be a dinnertime hero).
