Welcome to Nogojiwanong, the Place at the End of Rapids.
Long before this area was called Peterborough, it was known as Nogojiwanong, Ojibwa for “place at the end of rapids.”
The Kawarthas is located on the Treaty 20 Michi Saagiig Anishinaabeg territory and in the traditional territory of the Michi Saagiig and Chippewa Nations.
Collectively, these territories are known as the Williams Treaty First Nations which include Hiawatha First Nation and Curve Lake First Nation.
The Kawarthas Tourism respectfully acknowledges that the Williams Treaty First Nations are stewards and caretakers of these lands and waters in perpetuity and that they continue to maintain this responsibility to ensure their health and integrity for generations to come.
The Kawarthas Tourism also recognizes that building strong communities depends on strong Indigenous communities.
