‘Safe Travels’ Stamp

Welcome to the Peterborough Museum & Archives (PMA), where we focus on preserving and celebrating the collective memories of our community – stories, images and traces of the people and the land.

The PMA first opened its doors to the public in October, 1967 as one of Canada’s centennial projects. Learn about Peterborough’s history in the permanent exhibition gallery. On display are artifacts from the PMA’s collection of over 45,000 objects. Visitors will see a glimpse of the past through displays demonstrating what life was like in the area before European settlement, during it’s early years as a town, and through the turn of the century during growth of industry and economic prosperity. A temporary exhibit space – with exhibitions changing several times each year – will offer an opportunity to view works on loan from other Canadian museums and institutions, as well as exhibitions curated in-house.

The PMA is a family-friendly venue, with many interactive elements for kids to enjoy. Consider exploring our exhibitions using a Play Trail bin, loaded with activities for your little ones to connect with Peterborough’s history, or grab a scavenger hunt to help focus on the displays. Kids will also love all of the storybooks, building materials, and play sets sprinkled throughout. Don’t forget to save time for a play on the playground, or a hike along the trails nestled within Ashburnham Memorial Park.

Admission to the PMA is by donation. The facility is fully accessible. There is also on-site parking, free-of-charge. Access to the Archives is by appointment.

The PMA’s open hours are:
Monday to Friday: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Saturday, Sunday and most holidays: 12 noon to 5:00 p.m.
