A tamal is made of cornmeal dough with a tasty filling, all wrapped up in corn husk or banana leaf and cooked by steaming. People love to enjoy tamales during the Day of the Dead celebrations and many other holidays. The word “tamal” comes from the Aztec word “tamalli,” which means “wrapped.” This ancient food has been enjoyed in Mesoamerica, possibly since as far back as 5000 B.C.
