Located in the village of Lakefield, known as the “Cradle of Canadian Literature”.
Christ Church Community Museum is located in the village of Lakefield, known as the “Cradle of Canadian Literature”. The museum, which is housed in Christ Church, houses important historical artifacts and displays of Christ Church and the 1855 burial grounds, the Strickland family history, Lakefield’s literary history (Susanna Moodie, Catharine Parr Traill, Isabella Valancy Crawford, Margaret Laurence), and pictorial displays of Lakefield from the late 1800′s. Still an active Anglican church, built in 1853 under the leadership of Col. Samuel Strickland, Christ Church is used as a seasonal museum operated by community volunteers.
For the Literary Tourist: This attraction is clearly of literary significance to the area. They even have one of Catherine Parr-Traill’s writing desks! While there, don’t forget to pick up one of their handouts featuring a Walking Tour of Historic Lakefield that includes literary destinations. Be sure call ahead for this attraction as it is only open to the public at certain times of the year.
