The Avant-Garden Shop offers homeowners and gardeners the finest in home décor and garden supplies in Peterborough & the Kawarthas, including gardening accessories and backyard birding supplies. The Squirrel Buster Plus, their best squirrel proof bird feeder, the Garden Bandit, their number one weeding tool, and their super-fabulous, mismatched Solmate socks are just a few of the treasures you’ll find! They have products from over 75 Canadian artisans in their shop and are increasing that number each year.
Established in 2002, the shop has evolved to be one of the favourite “go to” places for unique gifts that tell a story.
In 2017 The Avant-Garden Shop won CUSTOMER FIRST AWARD and in 2012 the BEST RETAIL BUSINESS (non-chain) at the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards. In addition Peterborough & the Kawarthas Economic Development presented the shop with an EPIC Ventures Award. In addition Peterborough and Area Garden Route, of which The Avant-Garden Shop is a founding member, won “The Promotion of the Year” award from the National Garden Tourism Conference in 2013.
Personally the owner, Brenda Ibey, won The Ontario Horticultural Association’s Hazel Wilson Award for her ongoing volunteer work with The Lakefield Horticultural Society. This award is given out once per year to a member from District 4 which consists of 17 horticultural societies.
The shop is conveniently located in downtown Peterborough in the heart of the wonderful Kawartha tourist region, steps away from the Otonabee river.
The shop is filled with an alluring collection of functional and decorative items to enhance your outdoor living and gift giving experience. More and more beautiful hand-made items made in Canada are brought into the shop each year. They also source from the US and include selection of Fair Trade items. “Buy Local – Support local” is their focus.
There is also an option for on-line shopping for a many of their beautiful products. Items carried in the shop are so popular that they regularly get shipped into the US, around Canada and also overseas!
