Announcing the Creation of a 5-Year Destination Development Strategy & Action Plan for Peterborough & the Kawarthas

PKT Destination Development Strategy COVID-19 Update

May 11, 2020

Shortly before the COVID-19 crisis hit Ontario, the stakeholder engagement phase of the Peterborough & the Kawarthas Destination Development Strategy and Action Plan project had been completed, and the consultants were preparing to draft the long-term strategy. Given the sudden immense change to the industry landscape since this time, the project’s Steering Committee have adopted to pivot the approach to tourism planning into two parts:

  • Short-term tourism recovery phase that supports the Peterborough & the Kawarthas Economic Development COVID-19 Economic Recovery Plan
  • 5-Year Destination Development Strategy (to be completed upon better understanding of the long-term tourism situation post-pandemic)

The consulting team will be reconnecting with tourism stakeholders in the coming weeks to gather updated input to shape the recovery planning.

We are encouraging all stakeholders including government officials, tourism businesses, tourism organizations, arts, entertainment and culture representatives, restauranteurs and anyone who identifies as being a part of the tourism industry to have your say by answering this question:

“What do you need most to rebuild your tourism business, and the tourism industry as a whole in this region?”

All answers can be sent to thekawarthas@gmail.com

Dear Peterborough & the Kawarthas Community Members & Tourism Industry Stakeholders,

Peterborough & the Kawarthas Tourism has recently begun the process of developing a 5-Year Destination Development Strategy & Action Plan to guide the sustainable growth of tourism for our region, which is a key supporting component of the Peterborough & the Kawarthas Economic Development 2020-2024 Future Ready Regional Economic Development Plan. The destination development project will take a three-phased approach, overseen by the Strategy & Action Plan Steering Committee comprised of Peterborough & the Kawarthas Tourism staff members and tourism industry representatives. The final strategy and action plan will be complete July 2020.

Phase 1: Stakeholder Engagement including site visits, stakeholder interviews, a stakeholder survey and workshop and two community information sessions.

Phase 2: Development of Strategy and Action Plan.

Phase 3: Finalization and Presentation of Strategy and Action Plan to Peterborough & the Kawarthas Economic Development Board of Directors followed by City and County councils.

Peterborough & the Kawarthas Tourism has secured travel and tourism consulting firm, Bannikin Travel & Tourism to support in this process. Bannikin has recently supported similar projects for Visit Oakville, the City of Orillia and Grey County, all in Ontario.
