Discover Summer in Peterborough & the Kawarthas

Before life got franchised and castles replaced cabins, there was the humble Canadian Cottage and Resort.

Luckily for you, this rare species still thrives in the welcoming habitat of Peterborough & the Kawarthas. Stay in a place still run by – and created by –the people who own it. Hear their stories. Tell yours. Play board games with family or friends. Splash in the finest lakes in Ontario. Arise before the sun and watch the mist come off the water as it soaks up the colours of creation. Treasure experiences you can have nowhere else because you make them yourself. And when you want to get out and about, there’s so much to do in the way of food, fun, culture and adventure… you just might need another vacation.

Check out our events page for a big list of things to do. Authentically individual.

Play On

The celebrated 4th Line Theatre at Winslow Farm features plays by and about Canadians. They’re staged out-of-doors, for a dramatic experience that’s brilliantly bold and absolutely memorable.

If outdoor entertainment grabs you, don’t miss the famed Peterborough Musicfest – a free outdoor music series in Peterborough’s Del Crary Park. Country music lovers flock to the Annual Havelock Country Jamboree ‘round the end of August. The Buckhorn Fine Art Festival is known far and wide.

A sky full of stars is a wonder to behold. And there’s no better place to see them than the Buckhorn Observatory. If your interests are more grounded, explore 13km of trails and 800 metres of caves at the Warsaw Caves Conservation Area. All you need is sensible shoes and a flashlight.

Our first peoples left their marks eons ago, with rock carvings along the cliffs of Minnow Lake. You can find them at Petroglyphs Provincial Park. The Park and interpretative centre are managed by the Curve Lake First Nation. The Park boasts the largest collection of aboriginal rock carving on the continent.

Sweet Success

Bored with the merlots and chardonnays? Have you tried fruit wines, for sipping or cooking? Fruit wines and vinegars may well become the next olive oil, able to transform dishes from ordinary to exceptional. Find out for yourself at award-winning Kawartha Country Wines.

In July and August, the berry pickings are at their peak. Pick your own – or pick ‘em up – at roadside stands, farmers markets or at farm stands like McLeans Berry Farm.
