What is so amazing about Peterborough & the Kawarthas is that there is so much to do…whether you’re on your own, with family or friends. And then there’s golf…whether you’re a scratch golfer or an occasional duffer, if you feel that a day without golf is like a day without sunshine….well, welcome to the sunshine…
The late, great golfer Bobby Jones once said “You swing your best when you have the fewest things on your mind.” He may as well have been thinking about Peterborough & the Kawarthas, because we know of few other places tailor-made to bring out the best in golfers. This is cottage country, after all, and even on our city golf courses, you’re a long way from city stress. Your game —and your mindset—can’t help but improve.
It’s no secret. PGA Tour Canada knew this when it chose our own Wildfire Golf Club on Stoney Lake to host the only pro-am event on its Canadian tour. The Wildfire Invitational, in which nearly 200 pro and amateur golfers are put to the test in a four-day-long tournament of skill, sets a new standard for local golf and the excitement is rubbing off on courses throughout Peterborough & the Kawarthas.
Our region boasts more than a dozen affordable public courses, catering to all skill levels. Their lush fairways challenge every aspect of your game, but best of all; they offer fresh air, fewer crowds, less noise, and captivating scenery.
Better still, some are associated with lakeside lodges and local hotels, and tempt golfers with special overnight stay-and-play packages. “For those three hours when I’m trying to put that little white ball in that very little hole, everything else just isn’t important,” says a veteran of our local courses. “No matter what anyone scores, there’s no such thing as a bad day when you’re golfing.”
