You don’t have to look far to indulge your taste for the arts in Peterborough & the Kawarthas. There’s a vibrant and varied scene throughout our region.
Artists and artisans are attracted for the same reasons that you will be: the scenery, the friendly people, the chance to escape the city.
Painters, actors, sculptors, musicians, glass and fabric artists, jewellery makers; they all flourish here.
Your quest for performance arts begins in downtown Peterborough. There, the Showplace Theatre is the local setting for all kinds of entertainment, from travelling productions to home-grown talent; up-and-comers to chart-topping pop stars. It’s also home to the Peterborough Symphony Orchestra. Meanwhile, Market Hall is a more intimate venue for musical acts and performing troupes. You’ll find improv and comedy, musical productions and recitals. Just outside the city, you’ll find unique venues like the 4th Line Theatre near Millbrook, which produces original historical dramas in a unique barnyard setting.
Visual Arts are the domain of the Art Gallery of Peterborough, whose permanent collection and feature exhibits are on view at its waterfront venue in Downtown Peterborough, and a host of others like the Kawartha Artists’ Gallery & Studio in Peterborough or Gallery on the Lake in Buckhorn, one of Canada’s largest retail galleries, with an amazing view of the lake. Also on the art lover’s must-see list is the Rice Lake Gallery, which showcases exotic Shona stone sculpture of various artists from Zimbabwe. Perhaps the best way to get acquainted with the arts community is to take one or both of the autumn studio tours in our area: the Apsley tour in the north and the Kawartha tour in the south.
Above all, the arts bring people together. In that light, theatres and galleries make a visit to Peterborough & the Kawarthas even more memorable.
