SUMMARY:Weaving Workshop: Coiled Basketry with Foraged Materials
DESCRIPTION:For generations\, people have been using locally sourced and readily available materials to create baskets. In the first class of this two-part workshop\, you’ll learn about a variety of local plants that can be used for basketry\, as well as items that might be growing in your own yard and home or even found in the fridge. We’ll also go into detail on how to gather\, prepare\, and dry these items to make baskets. I’ll show a few techniques for making braids and cordage out of natural materials. Finally\, we’ll look at how to make inserts with wood and nut slices. In the second half\, you’ll be able to use the materials you’ve prepared to make your own small coiled basket. You’ll also learn some of the more complex stitches that can be used in this type of basketry. \nWhile all the tools and materials you’ll need will be provided\, feel free to forage locally in your own yard\, neighbourhood\, or even fridge for items that could become baskets. Some great materials include grasses (long\, thin\, and leafy are best)\, long pine needles\, cattail leaves\, reeds\, dandelion stems\, cornhusks\, iris/crocosmia/lily/daffodil leaves (from the garden or saved from bouquets)\, young raspberry stalks\, burdock stalks\, spider plant\, bamboo leaves\, wild garlic stem\, rhubarb stalk\, leeks\, and even banana skins (bring a whole eating banana if you want to learn to make lovely black cordage). Any items you’d like to work with should be brought to the first class.

Learning to create crochet granny squares can open the doors to an abundance of fun and exciting projects; like blankets\, sweaters\, bucket hats\, and so much more! \nThis workshop is recommended for beginners. Having some basic knowledge/experience with crochet is helpful for getting started\, but not necessary. DESCRIPTION:Two of Canada’s greatest roots singer-songwriters have finally done what everybody’s wanted — heck\, what they’ve wanted — for years. Dave Gunning and J.P. Cormier are releasing their first album together\, called Two. Great friends\, frequent collaborators\, co-writers and touring partners\, the pair has been talking about this album since pretty much the day they met. Now it’s here\, and it’s everything fans hoped and dreamed it would be. \nThe album is called Two because that’s what it is\, just the two of them. \nTwo is made up of everything the duo excels at. There are new collaborations between the two writers (Brothers\, Home To Mary)\, new arrangements of antique folk numbers (Johnny Armstrong\, Katie o’ the Gowrie)\, and some tasty\, surprising covers (Never Picked Cotton\, Stompin’ Tom’s Songbird Valley). \nGunning & Cormier go back 23 years when Dave had a fiddle player drop out of a show at the last minute. “He hired me for a gig when I was just back from Nashville\, nobody knew me here\,” says Cormier. \nSince they’ve been two of the busiest solo musicians in the country these past two decades\, it’s been impossible to schedule time to make a full album and properly tour it. But that all changed three years ago when Cormier moved just down the road from Gunning in Nova Scotia’s Pictou County\, and the pair were able to meet often at Gunning’s home studio. \nFirst\, they picked some great songs. Then they figured out their guitar parts\, and when ready recorded the guitars ‘live-off-the-floor’ simultaneously. Then they recorded their vocals together. This recording technique gave them what they’d hoped for\, something unlike their solo albums: The power of Two. \nTwo is as real as it gets. Two songwriters\, interpreters\, guitar players\, and singers at their peak. It’s the power of the song\, the highest quality from the past to the now. It’s two friends\, brothers\, uncompromising performers\, making the album of their lives. There couldn’t be a better time to discover Gunning & Cormier\, and the power of Two.

DESCRIPTION:‘They’re on their way\, to the city lights’ … and\, THE predominant Canadian Rock ‘n’ Roll band of the 1970s – The Stampeders – are bringing along all their classic hits: Wild Eyes\, Carry Me\, Oh My Lady\, Devil You\, Monday Morning Choo Choo\, Minstrel Gypsy\, Hit the Road Jack and\, of course\, the quintessential Canadian – and Hall of Fame – song\, Sweet City Woman! A veritable soundtrack to a whole generation that will ‘carry you home’ … maybe not to Birmingham … but back to a time of tie-dyed t-shirts and elevator shoes\, 15¢ coffee and homemade apple pie\, dating and dreaming … By the time The Stampeders get to the first chorus of the first song\, everyone will be singing along. \nNo seventies group represented Canada’s musical identity to the world like The Stampeders. A quick look at Canada’s music scene from 1971 until 1976 confirms The Stampeders were truly the country’s international musical ambassadors\, touring more extensively in Canada and overseas than any other Canadian group during that time. In 1977 the trio: Rich Dodson (lead guitar)\, Kim Berly (drums) and Ronnie King (bass) parted company but reunited\, fittingly at the Calgary Stampede\, 15 years later in 1992. Since then they’ve been recognized by SOCAN for their Lifetime Achievement\, been inducted into the SOCAN Songwriters Hall of Fame on five occasions and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame for their 1971 seminal hit Sweet City Woman.

DESCRIPTION:At the nexus of jazz\, blues and rock lies Steely Dan\, the musicians’ band. Pretzel Logic is a nine-piece band whose dedicated members play with a passion the music of Steely Dan\, whose legendary hits include: “Reelin’ in the Years”\, “Josie”\, and “Peg”. \nSince 1992\, Pretzel Logic has been executing their special interpretation and presentation of Steely Dan’s music.  Pretzel Logic has been consistently filling two of Toronto’s most important live music rooms\, The Orbit and Timothy’s for several years.  The band becomes even more dynamic when they do festivals and have a bigger stage to facilitate their higher energy performances.  It is remarkable how easily the band delivers Steely Dan’s complex yet intoxicating arrangements.  Combine strong players on every chair with excellent vocals and you have one of the most dynamic tribute bands to ever hit the stage. \nThe music of Steely Dan crosses many musical boundaries. From their jazzy horn lines and smooth vocals\, to rock guitar licks and funky grooves\, their appeal is wide ranging.
