SUMMARY:Vitals
DESCRIPTION:Starring Katherine Cullen\, the Dora-nominee for Outstanding Performance (Vitals). \nNew Stages is thrilled to launch our 2024-25 season of professional theatre with a unforgettable stripped-down version of the Dora-award-winning play Vitals by Rosamund Small. \nMeet Anna\, a Toronto paramedic who has reached her breaking point. Based on interviews and stories with real EMS workers\, Vitals is masterfully written\, and anchored by an incredible performance from Katherine Cullen (who originated the role in Outside the March’s award-winning production in Toronto). \nThis is an edge-of-your-seat\, visceral theatre event that you won’t want to miss! \nContent advisory: Vitals contains intense scenes\, themes of suicide\, and coarse language. Not for children.

SUMMARY:The Jack Matthews Fellowship Community Speaker Series Lecture featuring Marie Wilson
DESCRIPTION:Join Marie Wilson\, the 2024 Jack Matthews Fellow\, at the new Canadian Canoe Museum for a reading\, Q&A\, and signing of her new book “North of Nowhere\, Song of a Truth and Reconciliation Commissioner”. \n  \n\nAbout “North of Nowhere\, Song of a Truth and Reconciliation Commissioner”: \n“The incomparable first-hand account of the historic Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada told by one of the commissioners who led it. \nThe Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established to record the previously hidden history of more than a century of forced residential schooling for Indigenous children. Marie Wilson helped lead that work as one of just three commissioners. With the skills of a journalist\, the heart of a mother and grandmother\, and the insights of a life as the spouse of a residential school survivor\, Commissioner Wilson guides readers through her years witnessing survivor testimony across the country\, providing her unique perspective on the personal toll and enduring public value of the commission. In this unparalleled account\, she honours the voices of survivors who have called Canada to attention\, determined to heal\, reclaim\, and thrive. \nPart vital public documentary\, part probing memoir\, North of Nowhere breathes fresh air into the possibilities of reconciliation amid the persistent legacy of residential schools. It is a call to everyone to view the important and continuing work of reconciliation not as an obligation but as a gift.” \n  \nAbout the Jack Matthews Fellowship: \nThe Jack Matthews Fellowship is named in honour of one of the founders of The Canadian Canoe Museum\, who also founded the International Program at Trent University and was a Headmaster of Lakefield College School. Every year a fellow is chosen who embodies the value of those institutions\, and the legendary spirit of Canadian global citizenship that was Jack Matthews’ vision. \nAs part of the Jack Matthews Fellowship\, The Canadian Canoe Museum hosts an annual community event in the fall alongside Trent University and Lakefield College School.

SUMMARY:Song Collecting in the Trent Valley: Fireside Chats Series
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of words and music on the topic of song collecting in the Trent Valley as part of our new Fireside Chats series. The first in a three-part series\, this chat will tell the stories of song-collectors/scholars Edith Fowke\, Maude Karpeles\, and Niles Puckett who came to this region to record and document folk songs that were sung here between 1825 and 1925. Dr. Allan Kirby will give the presentation\, and singers Rob Cory and Rob Niezen will perform a few samples of the 200 year old historic songs discovered here. \nRefreshments will be provided\, and a question and answer period will follow the presentation. NOTE: Each chat in our Fireside Chats series is ticketed seperately. Purchasing a ticket will only admit you into this specific fireside chat. If you would like to attend the other two chats\, please visit their event listing to purchase tickets to them.

SUMMARY:Carole Pope
DESCRIPTION:Agent provocateur singer/songwriter Carole Pope is the co-founder of the band Rough Trade. Their signature electronic rock sound\, rooted in influences as varied as Punk\, Glam\, Brel and Brill\, coupled with lyrics and a stage show that pushed the boundaries of sexuality\, sexual politics\, and the status quo\, was designed to make you think and dance at the same time. It was a formula that clearly enshrined the band into the consciousness and playlists of fans the world over. \nPope is a 3-time Juno (Female Vocalist)\, 3-time CASBY\, Genie Award-winning\, Canada’s Walk of Fame\, songwriters Hall of Fame\, Indie Hall of Fame\, and 4X Gold\, Platinum\, and Polaris Prize Nominee. Pope’s lyric’s and live performance was a clarion call to arms for a revolution that helped to pave the way for future Canadian female artists (gay and hetero) including Peaches\, Tegan & Sara and k.d. Lang\, while becoming a worldwide cult influence on artists from Madonna to Lady Gaga to David Bowie\, the latter inviting Rough Trade\, in 1983\, to open the Canadian leg of the iconic Serious Moonlight Tour playing to capacity crowds as large as 60\,000.
