SUMMARY:Manar Moursi: The Loudspeaker and the Tower
DESCRIPTION:Artspace Peterborough is excited to present Manar Moursi: The Loudspeaker and the Tower\, organized and circulated by Trinity Square Video and SAVAC. \nThrough an immersive environment constructed of coloured lights\, megaphones\, masks\, videos and sculptures\, Toronto-and Boston-based artist\, designer\, and architect Manar Moursi presents a multitude of considerations to the viewer: What if singular patriarchal voices of religious sermons were interpreted through mime and dance? How would neon lights adorning mosque minarets look as sculptural objects? How do residents of Cairo challenge authoritative architectures and urban master plans\, whilst creating new meanings for public space and land use? By that token\, what shapes can we abstract from these biographical networks of the megalopolis? \nUsing the mosque as its starting point\, The Loudspeaker and the Tower examines the apparatus of the minaret as a vertical symbol of power and as a horizontal multiplier of official and unsanctioned narratives. Moursi’s installation revolves around a set of associated characters — residents of once agricultural lands\, mosque custodians\, imams\, architects\, artists\, and a parrot — to further understand the radical complexities of these structures. \nThe exhibit is organized and circulated by Trinity Square Video and SAVAC with support from Ontario Arts Council.

SUMMARY:Ghost Seamstress | Michèle Karch-Ackerman
DESCRIPTION:The act of making garments by hand\, one by one\, each time with a wearer in mind\, is an act of devotion. When the intended is no longer living\, this may seem an impractical gift. What it does\, is hold space for their imagined lives\, a place in which to put the energies of grief and hope. Each stitch is a reverential gesture; an offering; a product of care. The threads of Ghost Seamstress wind through histories\, literature\, domesticity\, nostalgia\, and labour to consider the lives of women and girls. \nMichèle Karch-Ackerman is a nationally recognized contemporary artist whose installations are known for inspiring viewers with their provocative and touching subject matter. For over thirty years her artistic practice has involved the devotional act of sewing clothing. Karch-Ackerman is an installation artist drawn to domestic\, traditionally feminine\, work: embroidery\, needlepoint\, knitting\, dress and doll-making. Her work considers the dead\, the forgotten\, and the hurting.

SUMMARY:Market Hall Performing Arts Centre Presents The Bros. Landreth
DESCRIPTION:The Bros. Landreth welcome a new day with Come Morning\, an album that marks both a rebirth and refinement of the JUNO-winning band’s blend of North American roots music and harmony-heavy soul. \nThe most immersive\, emotive record of the Landreths’ career\, Come Morning finds brothers Joey and Dave lacing their melody-driven songs with layers of atmospheric synth\, organ\, and textured guitar. The group’s previous albums shone a light on their strength as a live act\, capturing the spontaneity and sonic stomp of a band of hard-touring road warriors. If those records unfolded like snapshots of The Bros. Landreth’s nighttime shows\, then Come Morning sketches a markedly different picture\, showcasing the introspection and clarity that comes with a long period of rest.

SUMMARY:Peterborough's Dragon Boat Festival
DESCRIPTION:Get Back in the Boat on June 11th\, 2022!\nDragon Boat Races\, Vendor Village\, Kids Fun Zone\, Beer Garden and much more! Participate\, come shopping\, play games or enjoy some time in our Thirsty Dragon!\nPeterborough’s Dragon Boat Festival has been a community staple event for over 20 years. We’ve had the same goal since day one: to make sure that women and men from across our region have access to the tests and treatments that could save their lives\, right here in our community. \nEveryone participating in the Festival has a story – a way in which their own life\, or the life of a friend\, colleague or loved one has been touched by breast cancer or cancer – we encourage everyone to get involved\, whether it be as a volunteer\, a sponsor or a participant. \nThat’s why we raise money to help fund world-class breast and other cancer screening\, diagnosis and treatment at Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC). \nTo date\, the Festival had raised more than $3.7 million! \nWe’re beyond excited to #GetBackInTheBoat and see you at our 21st Festival on June 11\, 2022!
