SUMMARY:Handel's "Messiah"
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, December 16\, 2024 | 7 pm | Emmanuel United Church\nFeaturing: Midori Marsh – soprano | Jennifer Enns Modolo – mezzo soprano | Colin Ainsworth – tenor | Jonathan Liebich – bass \nAccompanied by: Ian Sadler on the organ \nConcert Sponsor:  \nIn 1685\, three babies arrived on the planet\, babies who would go on to leave an incredible legacy of music for the world. This past spring\, you may have experienced Johann Sebastian Bach’s towering masterpiece\, the Matthaüs-Passion\, or St. Matthew Passion. J.S. Bach was born March 31\, 1685 and several of his children became composers too. Lesser known\, but equally talented was Italian Domenico Scarlatti (October 26\, 1685)\, part of a musical family who contributed greatly to music mostly for the keyboard as he worked in the service of Portuguese and Spanish royal families. Before both of these fellows\, born March 5\, 1685 in Brandenburg-Prussia\, was George Frideric Handel. He became a naturalized British subject (to German-born royals) where he composed many operas and oratorios\, among other works\, and famously penned The Messiah in 1742. That’s three composers whose music transcends time and moves listeners as much in their own time as it does now.

SUMMARY:Danny Michel & Steve Poltz
DESCRIPTION:Danny Michel\n\nThe only good thing about not shopping in record stores anymore is you won’t have to figure out what genre to look for Danny under. If that were the case\, you could try looking under\, rock\, pop\, folk\, world or even classical. \nHis own self-described musical A.D.D. has kept his music fresh for decades. Maybe it has something to do with being born next to a candy factory\, or his ambidextrous brain\, but his thoughtful lyrics & charming performances have earned a devoted fan base\, multiple nominations for Junos\, The Polaris Prize\, CBC’s “Heart Of Gold”\, and most recently winning the CFMA’s “Producer of the year” and “Oliver Schroder Pushing the Boundaries” Awards. \nBut Danny considers his career highlights to be the unique real life moments like performing for Jane Goodall’s 85th birthday party\, touring with Stuart Mclean and working with charities close to his heart. \nSteve Poltz \nIt might’ve even been last night\, but Steve Poltz just played the greatest show of his life. Guess what? \nThe next show will be even greater\, making that show the greatest show of his life. \nAre you starting to notice a trend? \nHe isn’t shy about it either. \nEven after most likely thousands of shows (but who’s counting?)\, he hits the stage with the same amount of energy and always makes sure to declare\, “This is the greatest show of my life.” \nIt’s why he’s quietly emerged as the kind of live phenomenon celebrated passionately by a diehard fanbase worldwide and renowned as a festival favorite everywhere from Bluesfest in Byron Bay and High Sierra Music Festival in California and Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Colorado to Cayamo Cruise (where he actually got married). It’s why his music has crept into pop culture via collaborations with everyone from Jewel and Billy Strings to Molly Tuttle\, Sierra Hull\, Nicki Bluhm\, Oliver Wood\, and even the late Mojo Nixon. It’s why after over a dozen albums\, he’s still creatively firing on all cylinders and critically acclaimed by the likes of Rolling Stone\, Associated Press\, Billboard\, and many more. \nNevertheless\, the next gig will be the greatest show for him (and maybe for you too)…

Never one to mince words\, Woods is one of music’s most vulnerable storytellers and on his forthcoming studio album\, Donovan takes that a step further. Honest and unflinching\, on Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now\, his upcoming seventh studio album\, Woods takes a long look inside and isn’t necessarily thrilled with what he sees. For an artist who isn’t afraid to bear his soul\, this is as emotionally gritty as he has ever been. \nLong known as a masterful storyteller\, Woods is at his absolute best on Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now. Across the album’s 12 sparse\, intimate songs\, Woods finds himself reflecting on the ups and downs he has been through since 2020. His writing allowed him to open up and address the complexities of life that he has been going through. The album\, he notes\, serves as “a funeral to the life he was living.”. \nAs Woods continues to work on himself\, Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now is the portrait of a songwriter at his creative best. Addressing the truths and pains of life is never easy\, and here\, he does so in a way that’s brutally honest. After all\, that’s what great songwriters do.

SUMMARY:Chicago Transit
DESCRIPTION:There are a lot of bands doing a tribute to the band Chicago\, but back in the early 90’s\, when Powerhouse decided to put together their Chicago Transit tribute act\, they were the first in the world to do so. And they remain today as the longest running Chicago tribute band and the only one to carry four lead vocalists\, just as the band Chicago does. \nThe bands’ 5 lead singers\, the 3-piece horn section and the 5 piece rythym section\, made this show a natural for the band – even getting credit from the band Chicago themselves\, back in the 90’s. \nIn twenty-five years\, the band\, based in Hamilton\, Ontario\, Canada has performed their show at Festivals\, Theatres\, Casinos and various other venues from as far east as the Gatineau Hills in Quebec\, south to Florida\, USA and the US Midwest – including Chicago\, Illinois\, itself.

SUMMARY:Skye Wallace
DESCRIPTION:The Act of Living Tour \nSkye Wallace missed the turnoff for fitting into a box a long time ago. \nWith a voice like a soaring instrument\, unflinching lyricism\, and a swaggering live show shaped by years on the road\, Skye Wallace is a singular force on a mission to melt faces and elevate heart rates. \nTouring with respected rock acts like Matt Mays and Crown Lands and opening for international names like Tori Amos and Television\, Skye and her high voltage backing band have achieved cult-following status under the dim light of bars and clubs all over the world. \nIt is with brand new head-turning single Tough Kid that Skye Wallace makes their production debut alongside award-winning co-producer and collaborator\, Hawksley Workman. Tough Kid\, the dancey\, grinding\, enormous tune dictating the death of fear\, is a beacon signalling the sonic storm to come. \nDubbed a “national treasure” (Sad Mag)\, “one to watch” (Globe & Mail)\, and fuelled by “raw passion and musical power” (CBC)\, if you don’t know about Skye Wallace\, where have you been? \nAsh Molloy \nReminiscent of 90’s alt-icons like Fiona Apple and Alanis Morissette – Ash Molloy is vulnerable\, raw\, and unfiltered in her approach to writing music. A multi-instrumentalist with a degree in neuroscience\, she’s full of surprises as she bares it all with her deep-cutting takes on sexuality\, body-shame\, and life as a woman. Not fitting the mold of her small town in St John’s\, Newfoundland\, Ash is an absolute force of an artist\, making a name for herself with her mesmerizing live show\, powerhouse vocals\, poignant lyrics\, and sheer tenacity to get her message out into the world. Saying all the things we’re afraid to say out loud\, Ash Molloy bleeds authenticity and induces goosebumps for anyone lucky enough to see her live in these early days.
