SUMMARY:Peterborough Musicfest Presents: Aysanabee with special guest Cale Crowe
DESCRIPTION:Aysanabee (Ace-in-abbey)\, a two-time JUNO award-winning alternative indie artist\, multi-instrumentalist\, producer\, and singer-songwriter will be gracing the Musicfest Stage July 3rd\, treating Peterborough to a swirling mix of indie\, soul\, electronic sounds\, and the pulse-quickening fingerpicking that earned him the first JUNO award by any indigenous artist. He is Oji-Cree\, Sucker Clan of Sandy Lake First Nation\, a remote fly-in community in the far reaches of Northwestern Ontario\, Canada\, now calling Toronto home. \nHis debut album\, Watin (Nov 2022)\, named after his grandfather\, includes ten tracks and nine interludes featuring the voice of his grandfather that combines music and journalism with artistry and expression. The success of the album earned Aysanabee acclaim as a uniquely talented artist\, proving that he is here to stay and will continue to be a major force in the Canadian music scene. \nHis music has garnered an extensive list of accolades and support. The single  “Nomads” charted on Billboard Canada\, reached #1 on CBC Music\, and #1 on the Alternative Radio Chart (March 2023). “We Were Here” charted on the Indigenous Music Countdown\, was featured on an episode of Station 19 (ABC/CTV)\, and was performed live at the 2023 JUNO Awards. \nIn early 2024\,when Aysanabee made history as the first Indigenous artist to win the JUNO Awards for Alternative Album of the Year and Songwriter of the Year for his EP Here and Now\, he followed up the wins with a memorable performance on the awards broadcast with a tribute to Robbie Robertson and Gordon Lightfoot alongside Allison Russell\, William Prince\, Julian Taylor\, Shawnee Kish\, Logan Staats\, and the Rainbow Coalition. He was also nominated for Contemporary Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year. \nHaving been compared to Bon Iver\, Matt Corby\, Hozier\, Kim Churchill\, and Kings of Leon\, Aysanabee’s album With Here and Now (Oct 2023) took a new direction\, tackling personal experiences of love’s end with unflinching self-examination. CBC Music boasted that\, “Here and Now reveals an artist deep in his groove. Aysanabee has rounded out his sound\, blending elements of gospel\, roots\, soul and rock. The production and his earth-shattering voice put him in line with artists like Matt Corby\, Hozier and Kings of Leon.”\n\nHe has been short-listed for the 2023 Polaris Prize\, won three 2023 Summer Solstice Indigenous Music Awards for Artistic Video\, Pop/Alternative/Rock Album of the Year\, and Rising Star. He also won the 2023 Jim Beam Indie Award for Indigenous Artist of the Year and the 2023 Canadian Live Music Award for New Touring Artist of the Year. Among his many accomplishments\, Aysanabee was nominated for a 2023 JUNO Award for Contemporary Indigenous Group or Artist of the Year. Moreover\, he became the first Indigenous artist to hit Number 1 on Mediabase Canada’s Alternative Rock chart in March 2023.   Aysanabee last performed in Peterborough in November 2023 at Market Hall. \nOpening for Aysanabee is Cale Crowe\, a local singer-songwriter from the Alderville First Nation territory who has been entertaining audiences as a  “One-Man Band” act\, performing acoustic guitar\, electronic drum\, and a loop station pedal. Crowe has performed all over North America from Sydney\, Nova Scotia\, to Albuquerque\, New Mexico with notable acts such as Ron Sexsmith\, The Strumbellas\, William Prince\, Digging Roots\, and countless others. Cale is currently finishing his third studio record\, the “Burn Blue” EP\, and continues to tell his story – and the stories of others – behind the strings of an acoustic guitar and a microphone. \nListen to Aysanabee HERE \nListen to Cale Crowe HERE

SUMMARY:Peterborough Musicfest Presents: Tim Baker + Great Lake Swimmers
DESCRIPTION:Led by singer/songwriter Tony Dekker\, the critically acclaimed indie-folk band Great Lake Swimmers is teaming up with Tim Baker of Hey Rosetta! to hit the stage at Del Crary Park on July 6th. \nThe Toronto-based Great Lake Swimmers feature a blend of acoustic instruments\, rural soundscapes\, and wistful vocals\, creating a pastoral warmth. Known for their homespun folk and lush\, intimate Americana\, the band celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2023 with “Uncertain Country\,” an album that tackles the collective anxiety of a world mired in uncertainty\, where doubts are followed by discovery and themes of new beginnings. Recorded in different locales with a variety of musicians\, a theme of questioning runs throughout the album. \n“Moonlight\, Stay Above” encapsulates the band’s ethos beautifully with a 10-voice strong women’s choir (Niagara’s Minuscule) lifting it from its wistfulness. They were shortlisted for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize and nominated twice for Canada’s Juno Awards\, with the CBC calling them “a national treasure.” Critics describe their music as “a stunning variety of tones and textures… nothing less than both cerebral and sublime.” \nJoining Great Lake Swimmers is Tim Baker\, known for founding Hey Rosetta!\, a Juno-nominated\, Polaris-shortlisted\, and multi-award-winning band based in St. John’s\, Newfoundland. With over 15 years of performing their high-energy spectacle in stadiums\, clubs\, theatres\, and major festivals worldwide\, Hey Rosetta! called it quits in 2017. \nBack in 2016\, Baker debuted his first solo song\, “Spirit\,” on CBC Radio’s “The Current” as part of a special series on the economic challenges of life in Newfoundland. The song appears on the 2019 album “Forever Overhead\,” which in June of that year was named to the initial longlist for the 2019 Polaris Music Prize. At the Juno Awards of 2020\, he received a nomination for Songwriter of the Year for the songs “All Hands\,” “Dance\,” and “The Eighteenth Hole.” \nBaker\, who performed “Songbirds” at the investiture of Mary Simon as Governor General of Canada\, released his second solo album\, “The Festival\,” in October 2021. It includes singles “Lucky Few\,” “Some Day\,” and “Echo Park” (written during Baker’s time as the lead singer of Hey Rosetta!). \n  \nListen to Tim Baker HERE \nListen to Great Lake Swimmers HERE

SUMMARY:Peterborough Musicfest Presents: Chilliwack
DESCRIPTION:Rising from the ashes of psychedelia in 1969\, Bill Henderson spearheaded the creation of one of Canada’s greatest rock bands. Formerly a member of The Collectors\, Henderson filled the void left by the departure of lead vocalist Howie Vickers and transitioned the band into Chilliwack. The name Chilliwack was inspired by the Salish term for “valley of many streams” and the city located east of their hometown\, Vancouver. \nBetween 1970 and 1984\, Chilliwack released 12 albums\, an astonishing output that yielded numerous Canadian and international hits\, including “Lonesome Mary\,” “Fly at Night\,” “California Girl\,” “My Girl (Gone\, Gone\, Gone)\,” and “Whatcha Gonna Do.” This prolific period resulted in fifteen gold and platinum certifications\, a host of awards\, high-profile TV appearances\, and coliseum concert tours. In 2019\, Chilliwack was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame\, a testament to their lasting impact on the music scene. Chilliwack’s reputation for delivering consistently excellent live performances continued with the success of their live album There and Back in 2023 and subsequent shows\, winning over new fans and delighting longtime followers. Bill Henderson and company continue to deliver outstanding performances. \n  \nListen to Chilliwack HERE

SUMMARY:Peterborough Musicfest Presents: I Mother Earth
DESCRIPTION:When brothers Christian and Jagori Tanna met Edwin back in 1990\, the latter thought it would be a good idea to put a band together\, and now\, 30 odd years later (including an 8-year hiatus)\, I Mother Earth continues to rock stages as a stalwart on the Canadian rock scene. On July 13th\, they will be gracing the stage at Del Crary Park once again\, not too far from where the Tanna brothers went to high school. \nWhen I Mother Earth ended their eight-year hiatus in March of 2012\, they did so by putting a countdown clock on their website that expired just in time for the band to perform two sold-out shows at Toronto’s Sound Academy. In 2016\, they turned the clock back—20 years back to be exact—and reunited with the band’s original vocalist\, Edwin\, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the critically acclaimed multi-platinum album Scenery and Fish. From there\, the reunion tour commenced and was a tremendous success\, including shows with Our Lady Peace. It was so enjoyable that the band decided to formally reunite with Edwin indefinitely and also headed back into the studio to create new material. In 2016\, I Mother Earth’s tour included a stop in Peterborough to play at Musicfest. \nScenery and Fish spawned 4 Top 10 Hits in Canada with “Raspberry\,” “Another Sunday\,” “Used to be Alright\,” and “One More Astronaut\,” but it’s the new music on the horizon and the opportunity to dive into their first record\, “Dig\,” that has both the fans and the band excited to explore. The debut record featured 4 top singles: \n“Levitate\,” “Rain Will Fall\,” “So Gently We Go\,” and “Not Quite Sonic\,” all of which hold a distinct place in the hearts of IME fans. \n“We are really looking forward to this exciting journey to revisit our entire IME history with Edwin\,” says Christian Tanna\, co-founder\, and drummer. “The fact that we are writing and jamming with this vibe is a huge rush. We really can’t wait to share this with our fans!” \nListen to I Mother Earth HERE

SUMMARY:Peterborough Musicfest Presents: Metric
DESCRIPTION:Peterborough Musicfest is excited to welcome Metric to Del Crary Park on Wednesday\, July 17\, 2024. This is one of many acts that will be featured during Musicfest’s 37th year at the park overlooking Little Lake in downtown Peterborough. \nIn 1998\, songwriting and production duo Emily Haines & Jimmy Shaw formed Metric and left Toronto for New York City in search of like-minded artists. In 2001/2002\, they were joined by drummer Joules Scott Key & bassist Joshua Winstead\, and found themselves at the centre of the city’s burgeoning alt-rock scene alongside bands like LCD Soundsystem\, The Strokes\, TV On the Radio\, Yeah Yeah Yeahs\, Interpol and more. \nTheir latest LP\, Formentera II\, was released in October\, 2023\, via their label MMI & Thirty Tigers. It is a testament to Metric’s singular purpose and stands among their best and most genre-defying work. The album closes the 18-song cycle started by 2022’s critically acclaimed Formentera. \nA few quick Peterborough related Metric facts: Metric last appeared in Peterborough back in 2010 at the Memorial Centre and lead singer Emily Haines’ brother Tim Haines operates local record store Blue Streak records in downtown Peterborough located on George Street. \nPeterborough Musicfest’s 37th season runs from\, June 29 to August 17\, 2024 with free concerts every Wednesday and Saturday night.

SUMMARY:Peterborough Musicfest Presents: Beau Dixon Band
DESCRIPTION:Born in Detroit\, Michigan\, the birthplace of Motown\, Beau Dixon developed a passion for music in his formative years after discovering the sound of Stevie Wonder in his parents’ record collection. Insisting on taking piano lessons at age six\, his first gig came at age twelve\, playing piano for his father’s church services in London\, Ontario. After high school\, he pursued music full time as a multi-instrumentalist and lead singer for rock bands\, touring in the United States\, Canada and Europe. He has written and produced songs for radio and television and has appeared on numerous albums. In 2000\, Beau started his own recording studio (Sound Kitchen Studio) in Peterborough\, Ontario and will be gracing the Musicfest stage with his eponymous band July 20th. \nAs a sound designer\, he was nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore Award for the production of Rifles at the Shaw Festival and Praxis Theatre. Beau has recently taken on the role of music director for Sheridan College and Lakefield College School\, and in summer of 2021 he was curator and music director for the Stratford Festival’s production of Freedom: The Spirit and Legacy of Black Music. \nAs an artist of mixed race\, Beau proudly carves the legacy of his ancestors into all of his work and publicly advocates racial inclusion. \n  \nListen to Beau Dixon HERE

SUMMARY:Peterborough Musicfest Presents: RÊVE with special guest dee holt
DESCRIPTION:Since making her label debut in 2021\, Montreal-born\, Toronto-based recording artist Rêve has established herself as one of the most promising dance-pop singer-songwriters of this generation. She has amassed over 110 million combined global streams thanks to a host of popular original singles\, from her debut track “Still Dancing” to the irresistible “SKIN2SKIN.” \nHer debut track “Whitney” reached #1 on the US Dance charts\, while her Canadian chart-topping track “CTRL+ALT+DEL” attained Platinum status only eight months after its release. It was featured on Canada’s Drag Race\, garnering a SOCAN Dance Music Award in 2022 and a Dance Recording of the Year award at the 2023 JUNOs. Rêve has also received nominations at the 2023 JUNO Awards for Breakthrough Artist of the Year and TikTok Juno Fan Choice. Her sonic blend of playful pop and R&B-influenced dance music is inspired by the Euro sounds of the 90s. \nOpening for Rêve is fellow Montreal native dee holt\, who has risen to prominence after only recently revealing her talents. Not long ago\, the 19-year-old was singing along to her dad’s VHS home videos and performing at family gatherings\, without considering a career in singing. That changed when her mother coaxed her into serenading her boyfriend’s parents upon their first meeting\, and suddenly\, a career had begun in earnest. Since then\, holt has been working with producer Benjamin Nadeau\, discovering an honest yet playful indie pop sound. \nTeen Vogue has called her the “one to watch\,” while SHEESH Media compared her vocals to Billie Eilish. On her second EP\, I’ll Be There\, dee really pushed her creative boundaries around a body of music that takes her to the next level. Reflecting on the process\, dee says\, “This project was such a fun experience\, in every aspect… I loved experimenting with my writing style and technique. I loved brainstorming and creating visuals that went along with the songs. But most of all\, I loved walking into the studio and getting carried away in the music\, trying new things. Coming up with an idea\, and then slowly watching it build and come to life is such a special feeling.” \nThis will be both performers first time at Musicfest. Rêve and holt with take the Fred Anderson stage on Wednesday\, July 24th. \nListen to Rêve HERE\nListen to dee holt HERE

The award-winning singer\, songwriter\, and philanthropist has been playing guitar since age eight and songwriting since age ten. Now\, years later\, she can say she’s played on some of the world’s biggest stages. \nEll has built a career through sheer determination and grit. Ell continues to prove that Forbes was not wrong when crowning her “one of the most exciting and talented young artists.” \nIn December 2013\, her first official single\, “Trippin’ on Us\,” debuted as the most added song for country music radio in both Canada and the United States with over 50 first-week adds. Ell has since been called “a true triple threat” by Guitar World\, “a star in the making” by Taste of Country\, and “a distinct figure in the modern country recording camp” by Country Weekly.
