SUMMARY:To Honour and Respect: Gifts from the Michi Saagiig Women to the Prince of Wales\, 1860
DESCRIPTION:In April 2023\, quilled birch bark makaks made by women of Rice Lake Village (now Hiawatha First\nNation) will arrive at the Peterborough Museum & Archives (PMA) for an extended loan visit from the\nRoyal Collection Trust in England\, where they have been cared for since they were given to the young\nPrince of Wales in 1860. The makaks will be exhibited and will be the focus of activities: workshops on\nquillwork\, Michi Saagiig Anishnaabemowin\, special tours of the exhibit\, and some visits in which\nparticipants will be able to gently touch them. \nDr Lori Beavis (Hiawatha) and Dr Laura Peers curate the To Honour and Respect project\, with a Planning\nCircle including Gimaakwe Laurie Carr (Hiawatha)\, Kim Muskratt (Hiawatha)\, Veronica King-Jamieson\n(Mississaugas of the Credit) and others. The project is funded by the Museum Assistance Program\n(Department of Canadian Heritage)\, Canada Council for the Arts\, the Ontario Arts Council\, and Hiawatha\nFirst Nation\, with in-kind contributions by the City of Peterborough and the Peterborough Museum &\nArchives\, whose staff will care for the makaks during their visit. The Royal Collection Trust is lending the makaks.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night of laughs at the Gordon Best Theatre! \nFeaturing Headliner Nigel Grinstead: \nNigel Grinstead’s laid back charm and absurd takes on life have earned him the reputation of being one of the most imaginative comics in Canada. He jumpstarted his career with consecutive victories in high-profile competition\, receiving the Tim Sim’s Encouragement Fund for his win at Cream of Comedy 2013\, placing first in the 2014 Toronto Comedy Brawl\, as well as taking home first place at the Homegrown competition at Montreal’s Just For Laughs Festival: an annual contest recognizing the strongest upcoming Canadian talent. His most recent victory came in the form of $10\,000 at the 2018 Brantford Comedy Festival. All of this momentum granted him the opportunity to perform in festivals all across the country including the Cottage Country Comedy Festival\, Sudbury’s LOL Festival\, and NXNE. Above all\, Nigel has had the distinct honor of taping three sets at Just For Laughs to air on The Comedy Network\, as well as two sets for CBC Television at the Halifax Comedy Festival. SUMMARY:The Mavericks
DESCRIPTION:The Mavericks\, the eclectic rock and country group known for crisscrossing musical boundaries with abandon\, has gone through three distinct phases since it was founded in Miami in 1989. An initial period of heady success marked by big hits and critical acclaim in the ‘90s. A long hiatus starting 2003 when the musicians each went their own way. And finally\, a triumphant reunion in 2012 which held long enough for them to recently celebrate the band’s 30th anniversary. Now\, The Mavericks have ushered in the fourth phase of their evolution with the #1Billboard debut of their first-ever\, all Spanish album\, En Español\, released on the band’s own Mono Mundo label. Although all 12 tracks are in Spanish\, as the title suggests\, the collection represents a diversity of musical styles and cultural traditions\, from tender boleros to brassy mariachi to reimagined Afro-Cuban classics. Seven of the tunes are familiar gems drawn from the vast Latin American songbook\, while five are originals written or co-written by Malo. Like the band’s entire body of music\, this one album cannot be boxed into a single category. The songs are as diverse as Latin America itself\, and as cohesive as the ideal of the American melting pot.
