SUMMARY:Watershed
DESCRIPTION:“In waterways\, there is a constant flow of intergenerational knowledge passing through the lakes\, rivers and oceans; every body of water holds a spirit\, a history and informs the land.” – Shannon Webb-Campbell \n“Watershed\,” is a group exhibition at the Art Gallery of Peterborough featuring the work of Mary Anne Barkhouse\, John Boyle\, Brad Copping\, Liz Magor\, Stan Olthuis\, Amanda Strong\, and Olivia Whetung. \nContemplating wetlands and beaver dams\, the Trent-Severn Waterway and canoes\, “Watershed” considers the ways in which power dynamics teeter at the surface of the water.

SUMMARY:Tim Baker
DESCRIPTION:Special Guest: Sister Ray \nBest known as the writer and front man of Hey Rosetta!\, a Juno-nominated\, Polaris-shortlisted\, and multi award-winning band based in St. John’s\, Newfoundland. With over 15 years of performing their high-energy spectacle in stadiums\, clubs\, theatres and major festivals all over the world\, Hey Rosetta! called it quits in 2017. \nBaker has since transitioned from being the leader and songwriter of a major indie rock band\, and ascended to a profound songwriter and producer. His solo LP\, Forever Overhead (Arts and Crafts)\, garnered him a Juno nomination for Songwriter of the Year\, three East Coast Music Awards (and several nominations)\, and a Polaris longlist. In 2019\, he released The Eighteenth Hole Variations EP\, the Side Door Sessions LP in 2020\, and that same year\, he released the Survivors EP. The Festival was released October 21\, 2022 and saw Tim play his biggest headlining shows to date\, including a sold-out performance at Massey Hall in Toronto. In fall 2023\, he embarked on his first coast-to-coast solo tour\, showcasing his skills as a songwriter and storyteller and cementing his status as one of Canada’s leading troubadours. \nSister Ray\, the project of Edmonton-born songwriter Ella Coyes\, was conceived out of necessity; a self-designed vehicle built to examine trauma with unflinching honesty. Armed with a voice that soars and scrapes in equal measure\, Coyes converts first-person recollections of big\, complicated love into universally potent allegories. Raised on the expansive prairies of Sturgeon County\, Sister Ray’s music is steeped in a wide range of cultural influences. With gospel bluegrass and 90ss country playing in the background of their youth\, it was the traditional Métis music played at home that not only brought them closer to their heritage\, but taught them a form of storytelling rooted in collective value\, resilience\, and safety.\nCommunion\, the 2022 debut album by Sister Ray\, is a raw\, meticulously-crafted portrait of momentous\, ordinary moments; experiences that define your past\, and instruct how you move through the world. Quickly met with critical acclaim\, the album was longlisted for the 2022 Polaris Prize\, and Pitchfork deemed it “a complex study of webs of interpersonal hurt\, and a celebration of emotional survival.” They have been featured on Audiotree\, Paste\, NPR\, and more\, along with appearances at Pitchfork Festival in Paris & London\, Primavera Weekender\, and headline and support dates across North America and Europe. \nTeeth\, their new EP on Royal Mountain Records\, came from a need for space and the repercussions conditional to this desire. “I was thinking often about intimacy and avoidance—crawling around to find where my place would be\,” Coyes says. The songs were written quickly and vigorously\, mimicked through the recording process\, crafted by Coyes over five days\, recruiting Ginla ( the Brooklyn based duo behind Communion and early Adrienne Lenker) as collaborators and producers. With three originals and a spectral cover of “I Never Will Marry\,” inspired by Linda Ronstadt’s interpretation\, Coyes discerns big and small epiphanies in Teeth. Their yearning tone and staggering honesty trickles throughout and the erosion leads to an opening—vacant\, unfamiliar\, and with room to breathe.

SUMMARY:International "Oberserve the Moon" Night
DESCRIPTION:Mark September 14th on your calendar because it’s International “Observe the Moon” Night and the Peterborough Astronomical Association (PAA) is hosting a free\, all ages\, public event at the Harold Town Conservation Area\, at 2611 Old Norwood Rd. and you are invited! Whether you have astronomy gear or not\, why not come out and be part of this worldwide event to celebrate our only “natural” satellite…the Moon! International Observe the Moon Night is a worldwide public event that encourages observation\, appreciation and understanding of our Moon and its connection to space science\, exploration\, and human culture. This annual event connects scientists\, educators\, lunar enthusiasts and interested public from around the world as Canada prepares to be part of mankind’s return to the Moon next year! \nOn this night an 11 day-old Moon will be nearing the end of its waxing gibbous phase\, so the lunar disk will be over half lit\, not only illuminating many craters across the moonscape\, but also providing a “terminator” that will dramatically highlight the boundary between the light and “dark sides” of the Moon. Please plan to show up about 8:00 p.m. EDT\, as sunset is about 7:30 p.m. but the Moon should be visible and remain so until after midnight. Spend as little or much time as you like\, no gear required\, as there will be a variety of telescopes and binoculars to observe the Moon throughout the evening provided by the PAA.\nDress according to conditions and a reminder that this is a weather dependent event and will be cancelled if necessary. Please check the PAA website and/or Facebook page for updates.
