DESCRIPTION:“We call it Feeding the Fire\,” Uncle quietly offers…\nThe Mountain Dene are naturally of a world apart\, in its way separate from our usual worldly cares and woes.\nTo keep it alive is an education in itself. – Antoine Mountain \n“Ets’ehch’I; Traditional Dene Burial Practices” is comprised of twenty-one paintings by Dene artist\, Antoine Mountain\, that share depictions taken from stories\, beliefs\, and traditions as an epistemological tool of Dene resurgence. \nAntoine Mountain is Dene\, North American First Nations\, originally from Radelie Koe/Fort Good Hope\, of the Dene Nation\, in northern Canada. His hometown is just a few miles from the Arctic Circle. In addition to his writing and scholarship\, Mountain is a painter primarily working in acrylics across a number of styles with Impressionist influence. The colours of the North and deep-rooted spiritualism inform his approach to depicting landscape\, portraits\, and figurative scenes.

DESCRIPTION:Opening Act: Rob Phillips & Carling Stephen \nFive-time Juno Award winner\, Jane Bunnett has turned her bands and recordings into showcases for the finest musical talent from Canada\, the US\, and Cuba. She has been nominated for three Grammy Awards\, received The Order of Canada\, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal\, and\, most recently\, The Premier’s Award for Excellence. \nWith Maqueque\, Bunnett has created something new and phenomenal in the world of jazz. What started out ten years ago as a project to record and mentor young brilliant Cuban female musicians\, has become one of the top groups on the North American jazz scene. Since 2015\, they have played in major jazz festivals like Newport and Monterey\, been featured on NPR’s program Jazz Night in America\, won a Juno Award for their first album\, Jane Bunnett and Maqueque\, were nominated for a Grammy Award for their second release\, Oddara and were nominated for a Juno Award for their latest release\, On Firm Ground/Tierra Firme. Most recently\, were voted as one the top ten jazz groups by the prestigious DownBeat magazine’s critics poll. \nIn 2011\, the United Nations Educational\, Scientific\, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30th as International Jazz Day to highlight jazz and its role in uniting people and communities across the globe. The goal of International Jazz Day Peterborough is to bring together our community\, local businesses and jazz enthusiasts so that people can enjoy the diversity of the genre today!
