SUMMARY:To Honour and Respect: Gifts from the Michi Saagiig Women to the Prince of Wales\, 1860
DESCRIPTION:In April 2023\, quilled birch bark makaks made by women of Rice Lake Village (now Hiawatha First\nNation) will arrive at the Peterborough Museum & Archives (PMA) for an extended loan visit from the\nRoyal Collection Trust in England\, where they have been cared for since they were given to the young\nPrince of Wales in 1860. The makaks will be exhibited and will be the focus of activities: workshops on\nquillwork\, Michi Saagiig Anishnaabemowin\, special tours of the exhibit\, and some visits in which\nparticipants will be able to gently touch them. \nDr Lori Beavis (Hiawatha) and Dr Laura Peers curate the To Honour and Respect project\, with a Planning\nCircle including Gimaakwe Laurie Carr (Hiawatha)\, Kim Muskratt (Hiawatha)\, Veronica King-Jamieson\n(Mississaugas of the Credit) and others. The project is funded by the Museum Assistance Program\n(Department of Canadian Heritage)\, Canada Council for the Arts\, the Ontario Arts Council\, and Hiawatha\nFirst Nation\, with in-kind contributions by the City of Peterborough and the Peterborough Museum &\nArchives\, whose staff will care for the makaks during their visit. The Royal Collection Trust is lending the makaks.

SUMMARY:Peterborough Farmers' Market
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to listen to the sounds of our local musicians while visiting our 100+ vendor outdoor market May 1 to October 31\, rain or shine in the Morrow Building parking lot. From November 1 to April 30\, we are located inside the Morrow Building just south of the parking lot. \nThe establishment of a central market area for individual trade or sales has been a feature of societies all over the world for centuries. This trade has taken place in Peterborough for the past 190 years. This efficient method of commerce (ie. producer\, direct to consumer) has gained much interest in recent years as small businesses have grown. We at the Peterborough Farmers’ Market are proud to be part of this popular phenomenon. \nAs producers of local food and crafts\, we stress freshness\, quality and value as we deal each and every week with our market patrons. Come and enjoy this traditional shopping experience.

It’s a day to celebrate our country – its diversity\, its culture\, and its achievements. \nOn Canada Day\, we also reflect on our country’s relationships with Indigenous nations and Indigenous peoples. We are all treaty people. In Peterborough\, we respectfully acknowledge that we are on the treaty and traditional territory of the Mississauga Anishinaabeg. \nDid you know? \nJuly 1 was made a statutory holiday in 1879 as the “anniversary of Confederation”\, which was later called “Dominion Day”. Dominion Day officially became Canada Day on October 27\, 1982. \nThis year’s parade theme will be Happy Birthday Canada!
