Night 1:

Arrive ready to uncork and unwind at Elmhirst’s Resort. Get checked in and shown to your waterfront cottage, looking over Rice Lake. Begin your night in their underground wine cellar, which is lined with Ontario and Canadian vintage wines. Enjoy a wine tasting in the cellar and learn about wine tasting techniques from knowledgeable connoisseurs. Then head to their Hearthside Room for an elegant dinner with a view to pair with your favorite wines. You cannot ask for fresher ingredients, as Elmhirst uses their own produce from their farm and gardens and prides itself on being self-reliant.

Day 1:

Enjoy a delicious breakfast at the resort and pack your things because we are heading into Peterborough to explore the local breweries and downtown area. You will want to have a designated driver today if you truly want to savour the Kawarthas. Our first stop is at Smithavens Brewery where the brewers themselves will take you through their microbrewery and show you the process of creating these German beers. After discovering how they make these award winning brews, try them yourself with a fleet in their tasting room and take home your favourite from their retail store.

Get into the spirit at Persian Empire Distillery, where you can book a distillery tour to understand the process of creating these award winning spirits. This will even include their secrets to the perfectly smooth vodka they create. Then head into their onsite store, and purchase their variety of Vodkas, Gins, Rums, Brandy, and even coffee liqueur. Persian Empire’s prides themselves in using Ontario products and recipes passed down through generations.

Our next priority, (other than drinks) is food. Enjoy a delicious meal at Ashburnham Ale House for lunch. Pair it with a unique beer from a variety of microbreweries across North America, including our area. They have a robust selection of their favorites, including some from Prince Edward County. Be sure to call ahead to reserve a table outside, or private room for your group.

The afternoon will be spent at the local breweries right downtown. Begin at the Publican House Brewery, Peterborough’s own gold medal award winning brewery. They offer six brews year round and specialty seasonal brews, all containing no preservatives. They also are integral in supporting and partnering with local businesses and organizations, including Primal Cuts and The Canadian Canoe Museum. Belly up to their tasting bar and sample the beers they have on tap, then head over to their retail store and make sure to bring home a growler (not the dog kind).

Our second downtown stop is at Olde Stone Brewing Company, which has been a downtown fixture for 15 years. Take a tour of their underground brewery, and then head upstairs to explore all the tastes they have created with an Olde Stone Sampler, including their seasonal beer of the month. Enjoy some perfectly paired food with your ales, and do not miss out on the local favourite Cheddar Ale Soup.

If you need to freshen up, head just a few blocks away to the Holiday Inn Waterfront. Enjoy their indoor/outdoor pool, live entertainment, riverside patio and convenient downtown location. Then head out for some nightlife at Le Petit Bar, and the Sapphire Room. Share some cheese, charcuterie and an array of wine and cocktails at Le Petit Bar. Then round the corner and arrive at the chic Sapphire Room Cocktail Lounge. They offer unique and ever changing cocktails for everyone and after a long day what better way to kick off those shoes and shake your groove thang with a cocktail in hand.

Day 2:

Walk a few blocks into the downtown core and stop into Dancing Blueberries & Desserts for a late brunch. They have incredible waffles, crepes, croissants, and fresh omelets to get some sweet with your savoury. After breakfast/brunch we will be heading to Buckhorn to Kawartha Country Wines, the first and only winery in the Kawarthas. This unique facility, including the wine making facility and tasting room is in a log cabin surrounded by their orchards and fresh fruit. Get a tour of this beautiful winery and enjoy their complimentary wine tastings, including their award winning fruit wines.

Not only do they make incredible wines but they also have a collection of hot sauces, barbecue sauces, jams and jellies all made from their local and on site produce. And do not miss out on Empire Cheese’s Kawartha Wine Infused Cheese. After all, what goes better than cheese and wine?

Have you ever canoed to the pub before? Well in Peterborough & the Kawarthas this is reality! Join The Land Canadian Adventures on a guided canoe ride along the Trent Severn Waterway and then enjoy some craft beers and apres-paddle snacks at Canoe & Paddle in Lakefield. Please contact Land Canadian Adventure to register for this tour or for more information.

If your time allows it, stop at Belmont Lake Brewery in Havelock, specializing in English beers with a Canadian twist. This is the region’s newest and smallest brewery located just off the shores of Belmont Lake. They offer three beers and due to their local popularity can sell out quickly. Be sure to contact them directly before making your hour-long trip to their beautiful location.

Want to try all these craft beers and more at one place? Come in June to the Kawartha Craft Beer Festival. Enjoy a selection of fresh local craft beers, delicious local food and live entertainment in downtown Peterborough.
