The township of Trent Lakes is made up of Buckhorn, Burleigh Falls and Kinmount. This mostly wooded northern section of Peterborough County is home to the far eastern side of Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park.
Trent Lakes is a small, cottage country township located north of Peterborough. Far enough from the city to provide a peaceful and quiet experience, yet close enough to enjoy the amenities, it is a wonderful place to get away. In addition to the provincial park, the Trent Severn Waterway passes through the township – allowing many boaters to pass through and visit this community. Trent Lakes is a cottage-oriented municipality, known for warmly welcoming seasonal and year-round outdoor lovers. Its natural beauty has to be seen to be believed.
As you make your way into the town of Buckhorn, traveling along the north shore of Lower Buckhorn Lake, you will come across The Gallery on the Lake. This is one of Canada’s largest retail art galleries. The gallery is proud to represent some of the most recognized and influential Canadian artists. This large and prestigious facility is tastefully set among the rocks and pines, making your visit a wonderful memory. Experience a wide selection of originals, prints, sculptures and unique collectibles.
At Lock 31 sit back and relax as you watch a variety of boats come through the lock. You can enjoy a nice lunch at The Main Street Landing Restaurant by the lock. Find your way up to the Buckhorn District Tourist Association where you will be provided with excellent customer service and will discover many unique attractions that Buckhorn has to offer. The Buckhorn Community Centre is home to many great events throughout the year and depending on when you visit you may get to enjoy events such as the Buckhorn Fine Arts Festival, In The ‘Nick’ of Time Craftshow, or the Spring Craft Show.
Make your way north to Kawartha Country Wines where you will be able to explore the wine making facilities, tasting room and gift shop that are housed in a restored log cabin built in 1866. Surrounded by 22 scenic acres, the land produces apples, pears, several varieties of raspberries, rhubarb and grapes. Along with this there are many stately maple trees which are used to produce their exquisite maple syrup ice wine. Kawartha Country Wines is a small winery dedicated to making premium quality fruit and grape wines.
Head south-west to Buckhorn Lake where you will come to Six Foot Bay Resort. This is a great place for families, couples and friends. Enjoy a variety of amenities including golf, a sandy beach, outdoor pool, mini-putt, shuffleboard, basketball court, baseball diamond, tennis courts and a play ground. After a round of golf or a day of relaxing on the beach, enjoy a nice dinner in the restaurant at Six Foot Bay. Spend the night in one of the waterfront cottages overlooking Buckhorn Lake.

As you cross the bridge over Burnt River, take your first left heading towards Austin Sawmill Heritage Park where you will find a variety of things to see and do. If you find yourself in Kinmount on a Saturday from May to October between 9:00am and 2:00pm, check out the Kinmount Farmers’ Market that has a selection of locally grown organic produce, artesian baked goods, maple syrup and fresh cut flowers. Step back in time as you tour the old Kinmount Railway Station as well as the Austin Sawmill. If you are a wilderness lover, the Victoria Rail Trail is for you, it runs right through Heritage Park.
Getting tired? Stop in and enjoy a movie at Highlands Cinema. Experience first run films as well as the museum displaying movie paraphernalia.
Finally, visit the Kinmount Artisans Marketplace where you will find local art, crafts, gifts, antiques, local history books and souvenirs. If you’re fortunate enough to be in the area in September, you won’t want to miss the Kinmount Fair!
Start your day off with a visit to Lovesick Lake Park where you can enjoy a scenic walk on the nature trails. Feeling hot? Relax at the beach waterfront area or take a dip in the unique Burleigh Falls rapids. Please be advised that the rapids may be running quickly, so use with caution as there is no supervision. Looking for a good spot for lunch? Stop into the Lovesick Lake Restaurant where you can enjoy lunch in the rustic cedar log dinning room or sit out on the canvas covered patio. After lunch, head next door to the gift shop where you will find unique gifts, toys, pictures and paintings, handcrafted furniture, moccasins, souvenirs, china, bait, ice and more. This gift shop is known for having the largest selection in the Kawarthas.
Feeling adventurous? Head over to the Burleigh Falls Inn where you can rent a variety of motorized boats from Town & Country Marine and tour through the surrounding scenic lakes.
Take a visit to The Market at Burleigh Falls where you will find a variety of fresh produce, meat, cheese, dairy, pies, bread and more. If you’re interested in staying the night, check out the Burleigh Falls Inn or Westwind Inn. The suites come with fully equipped kitchens, so you will be able to enjoy a nice home cooked meal with your fresh products from the market.
