There’s nothing better than a long weekend in the heart of the summer. In a place like Peterborough and the Kawarthas, an extra day off work usually means a little time on the lake, in the sun, perhaps with an adult beverage in hand. But while lovely weather and a multitude of lakes nearby might entice one to relax, this past weekend held forth a multitude of activities for those who like to keep busy on their days off.

For example, on Sunday afternoon, the Westben Arts Festival Theatre, near Campbellford, presented The Big Band Theory! In a 400-seat timber-frame barn set in a lovely meadow, the Brian Barlow Big Band celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of George Gershwin by playing a number of his greatest numbers. In the Heritage Pavilion on the slopes of Armour Hill, the Driftwood Theatre Group presented their interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, part of their annual Bard’s Bus Tour—which is making stops all across the province. And at Little Lake Cemetery, the Trent Valley Archives kicked off their month of tours in this idyllic place, set on the placid shores of the eponymous lake. While some may see such a tour as a little macabre, such tours are actually a fascinating adventure, in this case a journey into the city and area’s history and the lives of past residents. Add this to the usual line-up of great weekend summer events in the city and county—the farmer’s market at Morrow Park, the Little Lake Music Festival—and you have one very busy weekend.
