Hot Times, Summer in the City

July and August—there’s really no better time to be in Peterborough. When the temperatures rise, the city heats up with activity, beckoning visitors and locals alike to festivals, events and other fun that you only find here in the summer. Growing up in Peterborough, I got to experience all that the city had to offer, spending Saturday nights at the Little Lake Musicfest (which was then called the Festival of Lights), visiting the farmer’s market, walking through the paths of Jackson Park, riding down the Otonabee River in a motorboat and otherwise enjoying that urban-outdoors mix that is quintessentially Peterborough.
Fortunately, on my frequent summer visits back to the city from my home in Toronto, all of those things that made growing up in this city great are still available—and in many cases, are much improved. Little Lake Musicfest is back again with twice-weekly concerts, and again has a strong lineup, from classic Canadian rocker Kim Mitchell and pop superstars Hanson. The farmer’s market is still going strong, and Jackson Park is even better, with the addition of the four kilometer Jackson Creek Kiwanis Trail, which traces a former rail bed and is great for a refreshing bike ride. And, rather than a motorboat, I plan to hit the water this summer in a canoe or kayak from the boathouse in Millennium Park, downtown. I’m very much looking forward to these days of summer in the city. —Tim Johnson
