An EXcellent summer tradition

When I was a teenager growing up in Peterborough, heading to the Ex with my friends was one of those hallowed dog day traditions—no summer was complete without it. With our summer job daytime duties complete—the beach safely lifeguarded, the lawns all mowed—we would gather at someone’s house, have a barbecue, then head on down to Morrow Park. I remember playing copious amounts of whack-a-mole, riding the Zipper, then capping off the evening cheering on the demolition derby. They were good times, and form some of my fondest Peterborough summer memories.
Fortunately, after 167 years, the Peterborough Exhibition is still going strong. Held just this past weekend, the Ex boasted a huge number of events, and is still arguably the best value in the Kawarthas, with gate admission just eight bucks for an adult, twenty for the whole family. For motorheads, there was a tractor pull, a demo cross and, of course, the demolition derby. There were also concerts, a hardest slapshot competition, a petting zoo and, of course, the over-the-top pleasures of a busy midway. And the heart of the Ex has always been its agricultural displays, of which there were many, including a “horse-whisperer demonstration” (I didn’t catch that one, but wish I had!), a Holstein cattle show, a sheep show, and just the fun of roaming around the barns. It’s all over for this year, but I’m already looking forward to number 168. —Tim Johnson
