The Peterborough premiere of the feature-length documentary Pushback is finally here!
Pushback begins as staff and volunteers are closing up shop at the end of the season for the Warming Room – a homeless shelter of last resort in Peterborough, Ontario that provides respite during the cold winter months. The film follows five people connected to the shelter – four guests and a staff member – throughout the following summer and fall as they try to find steady footing without access to many of the supports the shelter provides. In the lead up to the opening of the shelter the next winter, the subjects strive to overcome obstacles from their past. They are besieged by physical injuries, divorce, and drug addiction – as well as new ones encountered during the course of filming – notably an apprehension by Children’s Aid Society. Pushback is a portrait of people living with persistent homelessness and often inter-generational poverty in Peterborough, providing an intimate look into lives usually ignored.
