MONDAY, MARCH 13

1:00-3:30 Arctic Adventures (ages 6-12) $17

TUESDAY, MARCH 14

9:30-12:00 Arctic Adventures (ages 6-12), $17

So popular we’re running it twice! A fun, hands-on workshop  to explore stone-carving safely and successfully! Participants create a soapstone pendant or small sculpture using only pre-shaped stone and sandpaper, water and oil, inspired by the Arctic artifacts in our collection. Traditional Inuit games and stories too!

Optional: Supervised lunch hour 12-1, $5

1:00-3:30 Woodworking with Wanigans (ages 6-12), $22

Try your hand at wood-working and create a 12”x8”x8” wanigan. Start with a scavenger hunt in the Museum to find the necessary pieces to build a wanigan. Kids encounter many styles of wanigan, ex. a traditional canoe-tripping equipment box. No previous wood-working experience required. Experienced and patient Museum staff teach each step. Participants come away with hands-on building experience (hammers, screwdrivers, sanding). Plus a box to keep any kind of treasure in to take home!

WEDNESDAY MARCH 15

9:30-12:00  Make a Leather Bag!   (ages 9-12) $17

Make a leather keepsake pouch and a treasure to go inside. Try your hand at making leather lacing, use artificial sinew and learn a specialized leather stitch to create your one-of-a-kind mini-bag.

Optional: Supervised lunch hour 12-1, $5

1:00-4:00 Paddle-Carving (ages 9-12), $22

Carve and craft a 24-inch paddle using the traditional tools! A great intro to paddle-carving that teaches many of the steps of full-size paddle-carving using a soft wood and a more accessible (i.e. quicker to complete) size.  Participants will explore paddle parts and unique paddles in our collection, but will spend most of the morning carving their own paddles with a spokeshave, and finishing it with sandpaper, to create a beautiful, smooth keepsake to treasure.

Please be sure to wear closed-toe shoes for safety during the wood-working part of this workshop!

THURSDAY, MARCH 16

9:30-12:00 Canoe Paper Arts (ages 8-12), $17

Make your own paper from scratch using scraps, rags, bark and other natural materials. Explore canoe imprints, birch bark paper and more!
